クルパイティの戦いで右手を失った後、カンディド・ロペスは左手で絵を描く技術を磨き、戦場のスケッチを油彩画へと昇華させた。その比類なきパノラマ構図は、時間を静止させ、戦争の情景をまるで音楽のような調和で伝えている。グアヤカンの樹々とヤタイの森の間を、曲線を描くように進む兵士たちの列。彼の作品には、煙のヴェールを通して見える三国国境地帯（トリプル・フロンテラ）の植物たちと、負傷した画家の、パステルのように淡く静かな眼差しが、静かに息づいている。
